Masonic Symbolism

What is the symbolism of the East, South, and West Gates?

by Masonic Vibes on Monday, 5 December 2011 at 01:42

In the system of Freemasonry, the Temple of Solomon is represented as having a gate on the east, west, and south sides but none on the north. In reference to the historical Temple of Jerusalem, such a representation is wholly incorrect. In the walls of the building itself there were no place of entrance except the door of the porch, which gave admission to the house. But in the surrounding courts there were gates at all of the points of the compass. The Masonic idea of the Temple is, however, symbolic.
The Temple is to the Speculative Mason only a symbol, not an historical building, and the gates are imaginary and symbolic also. They are, in the first place, symbols of the progress of the sun in his daily course, rising in the east, culminating to the meridian in the south, which it is the object of the third degree to illustrate, symbols of the three stages of youth, manhood, and old age, or, more properly of birth, life, and death.

May you part upon the Square

I met a dear old man today,
Who wore a Masonic pin,
It was old and faded like the man,
It's edges were worn quite thin.
I approached the park bench where he sat,
To give the old brother his due,
I said, "I see you've traveled east,"
He said, "I have, have you."
I said, "I have, and in my day
Before the all seeing sun,
I played in the rubble, with Jubala
Jubalo and Jubalum."
He shouted, "don't laugh at the work my son,
It's good and sweet and true,
And if you've traveled as you said,
You should give these things their due."
The word, the sign the token,
The sweet Masonic prayer,
The vow that all have taken,
Who've climbed the inner stair.
The wages of a Mason,
are never paid in gold,
but the gain comes from contentment,
when you're weak and growing old.
You see, I've carried my obligations,
For almost fifty years,
It has helped me through the hardships
and the failures full of tears.
Now I'm losing my mind and body,
Death is near but I don't despair,
I've lived my life upon the level,
And I'm dying upon the square.
Sometimes the greatest lessons
Are those that are learned anew,
And the old man in the park today
has changed my point of view.
To all Masonic brothers,
The only secret is to care,
May you live your life upon the level,
May you part upon the square.

Ten Master Masons

Ten Master Masons

Ten Master Masons, happy, doing fine;

One listened to a rumor, then there were nine.

Nine Master Masons, faithful, never late;

One didn't like the "Master," then there were eight.

Eight Master Masons, on their way to heaven;

One joined too many clubs, then there were seven.

Seven Master Masons, life dealt some hard licks;

One grew discouraged, then there were six.

Six Master Masons, all very much alive;

One lost his interest, then there were five.

Five Master Masons, wishing there were more;

Got into a great dispute, then there were four.

Four Master Masons, busy as could be;

One didn't like the programs, then there were three.

Three Master Masons, was one of them you?

One grew tired of all the work, then there were two.

Two Master Masons with so much to be done;

One said "What's the use," then there was one.

One Master Mason, found a brother -- true!

Brought him to the Lodge, then there were two.

Two Master Masons didn't find work a bore;

Each brought another, then there were four.

Four Master Masons saved their Lodge's fate;

By showing others kindness, then there were eight.

Eight Master Masons, loving their Lodges bright sheen;

Talked so much about it, they soon counted sixteen.

Sixteen Master Masons, to their obligations true;

Were pleased when their number went to thirty-two.

So we can't put our troubles at the Lodge's door;

It's our fault for harming the Lodge we adore.

Don't fuss about the programs or the "Master" in the East;

Keep your obligation by serving even the very least.

King Solomon's Temple

A comparison between the account of the building of King Solomon's Temple in Masonic Ritual and the accounts given in the Old Testament of the Bible. It concludes that while many similarities between the Biblical and Masonic account of this event exist, there are also some discrepancies.

Brothers on the "Rock"
Canada Military
There is a granite outcropping in the middle of nowhere in South-central Wyoming called "Independence Rock". This giant stone bolder was a travel marker for the pioneers heading west on the Oregon Trail, the California Trail and the Mormon Trail. The trail bosses knew that if the travelers made it to Independence Rock by the 4th of July, they had a good chance of getting over the Rocky Mountains before the winter snow blocked the path. The pioneers would rest at the site over Independence Day and some climbed the rock and chiseled their names along with the date into the rock. Many carved names can still be seen.

On July 4th 1862, a number of Freemasons heading west on the trails climbed to the top of the Rock and opened Lodge. This was the first Lodge meeting held in what is now Wyoming. To commemorate this event, the members of the Grand Lodge of Wyoming climb the Rock every 10 years on the 4th and open a formal Lodge.

This year I had the privilege, along with 200 other Masons from Wyoming and around the Nation, to join the Grand Lodge for this celebration. Many camped there overnight and all enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of meeting together on the level. This was an Independence Day that I will not forget. .............. Neil

The Temple of Living Stones      -Lawrence N. Greenleaf.

The Temple of Living Stones
The temple made of wood and stone may crumble and decay
But there's a viewless Fabrie which shall never fade away;
Age after age the Masons strive to consummate the Plane
But still the work's unfinished which th' immortal Three began;
None but immortal eyes may new, complete in all its parts
The Temple formed of Living Stones-the structure made of hearts.
'Neath every form of government, in every age and clime:
Amid the world's convulsions and the ghastly wrecks of time.-
While empires rise in splendor, and are conquered and overthrown
And cities crumble into dust, their very sites unknown,-
Beneath the sunny smiles of peace, the threatening frown of strife,
Freemasonry has stood unmoved, with age renewed her life.
She claims her votaries in all climes, for none are under ban
Who place implicit trust in God, and love their fellow man;
The heart that shares another's woe beats just as warm and true
Within the breast of Christian, Mohammedan or Jew
She levels all distinctions from the highest to the least,-
The King must yield obedience to the Peasant in the East.
What honored names on history's page, o'er whose brave deeds we pore,
Have knelt before our sacred shrine and trod our checkered floor !
Kings, princes, statesmen, heroes, bards who square their actions true,
Between the Pillars of the Porch now pass in long review
0, Brothers, what a glorious thought for us to dwell upon,-
The mystic tie that binds our hearts bound that of Washington!
Although our past achievements we with honest pride review
As long as there's Rough Ashlars there is work for us to do
We still must shape the Living Stones with instruments of love
For that eternal Mansion in the Paradise above;
Toil as we've toiled in ages past to carry out the plan,-
'Tis this;-the Fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of Man !
-Lawrence N. Greenleaf.

His contributions in prose and poetry have been Masonic in sentiment and have been widely copied. He was active in the Masonic fraternity for more than forty-six years, having presided over lodge, chapter, council and commandery, while in the grand bodies he filled the offices of Grand Master, Grand High Priest and Grand Master of the Royal & Select Masters. He is a thirty-third degree Mason and was the deputy of the inspector general in Colorado, and he presided over the various bodies of the Scottish Rite, yet all this comprises but a small part of the many positions he  filled as merchant, as Mason, as editor and writer of prose and poetry.
